Ask anyone why they have put off a gastroscopy and the answer is rarely the cost. It is the scope. China's screening centres have worked around that, and the workaround fits in a glass of water. Here is the technology that makes the top screening tiers worth a flight — and an honest note on what each test can and cannot do.
Capsule gastroscopy: the camera you swallow
The capsule is the size of a large vitamin pill. You swallow it with water in the morning, and it spends the next hours transmitting tens of thousands of images of your oesophagus and stomach while you go about the rest of your screening. A doctor controls its position magnetically from outside the body. There is no sedation, no throat spray, no recovery room, and nothing reusable about it — each capsule is single-use.
The honest caveat: a capsule cannot take biopsies. If it sees something suspicious, the next step is a conventional endoscopy. For screening people who feel fine, that trade-off is usually worth it — most capsules find nothing, and their owners have checked their stomach without a scope ever going near them.
DNA colorectal screening: beyond the occult blood test
Standard stool tests look for hidden blood. The DNA methylation test in the SVIP tier looks for genetic material shed by colorectal tumours themselves — a meaningfully more sensitive screen for a cancer that is highly treatable when caught early and often symptomless until late. One sample, collected privately, no preparation diet.
AI retinal photography: the eye as a window
A camera photographs the back of your eye; an AI system reads it in seconds. It screens for diabetic retinopathy and age-related changes, but the vessels of the retina reveal more — patterns associated with hypertension, stroke risk and cardiovascular disease. It is the only place in the body where a camera can see your blood vessels directly, and it takes two minutes.
Coronary calcium scoring: the heart number worth knowing
Computed from the same low-dose chest CT that screens your lungs, the calcium score measures calcified plaque in the coronary arteries and expresses it as a single number. Zero is reassuring. A high score is one of the strongest prompts in medicine to take prevention seriously. Many people who feel perfectly healthy learn their number for the first time in a screening centre — and act on it.
Automated breast volume ultrasound
Standard breast ultrasound depends heavily on the operator's hand. The automated system in the SVIP tier scans the whole breast mechanically and reconstructs it in 3D, giving a reproducible, reviewable image — particularly useful for dense breast tissue, where mammography alone can miss findings.
And the oldest technology in the building
After the machines, a quieter station: digital pulse and tongue imaging feeding a traditional Chinese medicine constitution assessment, followed by an AI-assisted multidisciplinary review that combines the Western report with the TCM reading. Skeptics treat it as an interesting cultural artifact; believers treat it as the point. Either way, it is fifteen minutes you will talk about at dinner.
