Which Chinese cities have nonstop flights from the United States?
Shanghai and Beijing are the two our sources document, served from San Francisco and Los Angeles. Those two US airports are the dependable gateways; the rest of the country connects through them, flies a Chinese carrier, or routes via a third hub.
Our sources record nonstop Newark–Beijing and Chicago–Shanghai as not operating. Treat both as unavailable until re-checked rather than as confirmed gone — that claim rests on a single trade report.
Total US–China capacity is capped by agreement at fifty weekly scheduled round-trips per side, and authorised is not the same as operated. As of September 2026.
Shanghai or Beijing, on access?
Shanghai, on three grounds and none of them medical.
Frequency is moving its way: one US carrier adds Los Angeles–Shanghai service from October 2026, taking its China–US operation to nineteen weekly flights across Los Angeles, Detroit and Seattle.
It is the easier city to lose a day in and still recover the trip, which matters more on this kind of journey than on a holiday.
And both cities sit inside the twenty-four jurisdictions covered by the 240-hour transit exemption, so neither has an advantage there.
Beijing's case is that it is equally well served nonstop and is the better base if the rest of the itinerary runs north. That is a real argument and it is not the one this page is making.
Why does the US gateway matter more than the Chinese city?
Because the constraint is structural rather than local. Russia closed its airspace to US carriers in 2022, which lengthens the routes American airlines can fly, and a live US regulatory order restricting Chinese carriers from Russian overflight on US routes cuts the other way. The result is a thin, contested schedule concentrated on two US airports.
The hardest part of this journey is often domestic.
What about moving between cities once you are there?
High-speed rail takes foreign passports. You buy on the operator's own platform, which runs a full English mode, and you show the passport to enter, exit and board — the gate is a passport tap rather than a paper ticket.
Two practical points. Booking opens exactly fifteen days ahead, so a rail leg cannot be locked in earlier than that. And the commonest failure is a name mismatch: the reader checks every character of the printed name field and staff cannot fix it at the gate.
American Express is not accepted on that platform. Visa and Mastercard are, though foreign-card declines are common enough that a booking service is the standard fallback.
What about payments and phones?
Foreign Visa and Mastercard credit cards bind to Alipay and WeChat Pay without a Chinese bank account or residency, and passport verification lifts you to the higher tier in minutes. Set it up before you fly.
Google does not work on a mainland network — search, Gmail, Drive and Maps all fail. Apple services do work. Amap has an English interface and is the tool that will actually find an address.
What we do not tell you, and why
We have verified nothing about any Chinese hospital, specialism, standard of care or cost, so we assert none and we name no facility. Other sites publish city-by-city hospital guides. Those are their claims, we have not checked them, and repeating an unverified hospital claim in a health context is the worst error available in this category.
Two gaps we would rather state than paper over: we have not verified how appointment booking works for a foreign passport holder, and we have not verified what interpreting is available or who provides it. Both matter more than anything above.
If your reason for travelling is medical, the useful conversation is a phone call. Not an email, and not a form.
Do you recommend a hospital?
No. We have not verified one and we will not repeat someone else's claim about one.
Can you fly nonstop from the east coast to China?
Our sources record the Newark and Chicago nonstops as not operating and the reliable gateways as San Francisco and Los Angeles. That rests on a single trade source, so treat it as needing re-confirmation rather than as settled.
How far ahead can you book Chinese high-speed rail?
Exactly fifteen days. Not earlier, however much you would like to.
Will an American credit card work in China?
Bound to Alipay or WeChat Pay, in most places, yes. At a physical card terminal in a small restaurant or a street stall, often not. Carry some cash.
